Immaculate Conception of Mary

I am currently working on a piece of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The symbols for the Immaculate Conception date back to the Baroque period and are taken from the Woman of the Apocalypse in Revelation 12: “A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.”

Finished piece

From the get-go, I wanted to do a piece that captured the Jewishness of the Virgin Mary. I’ve found next to nothing in the canon of Western Art that represents her so. The last two days I’ve tried to make her look less Northern European (the right) and more Jewish (the left). I think I’m close.
